Job Description:

The Media Relations and Issues Management intern will help support campaign, client media and administrative duties as part of a 9-person team. This individual will develop a fundamental understanding of media relations for his/her portfolio, in addition to real-life office responsibilities and professionalism experience. This individual will be a “utility player” on the team, handling a variety of responsibilities as needed.

 

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Managing administrative duties, such as media hotline, media inbox and other team needs.
  • Assisting in social media channel management, including the X the TXT® Facebook page.
  • Supporting PR campaigns, including the Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report®, through event planning, execution, organization, creation of marketing collateral and writing/editing tasks.
  • Supporting client media relations and issues management duties, including the Allstate Newsroom.
  • Organizing Media team assets and coordinating meetings.
  • Participating in project meetings from inception to delivery to understand deliverables, audience, timing, goals and expected outcomes.
  • Assisting in the execution and planning of communication strategies. Developing a basic tactical plan with focus on timeline and audience needs.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with CR team members and colleagues in other departments.

Job Qualifications

Candidates should have a deep interest in and general understanding of communications, public relations and journalism; demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; and an ability to assume responsibility, prioritize their work and think creatively. In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Ability to assist in the execution and planning of communication strategies.
  • Ability to develop a basic tactical plan with focus on timeline and audience needs.
  • Strong writing/editing skills and an ability to weave corporate messaging into communications in a meaningful, creative and persuasive way. Ability to write for a variety of audiences. Knowledge of AP Style is preferred.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple work streams in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Experience using social media tools in a school or corporate environment, specifically creating social media campaigns.
  • Ability to work well with business professionals of varying backgrounds, talents and management techniques.
  • Ability to organize projects into discrete tasks, estimating and managing time required to complete tasks.
  • Capacity to process detailed information quickly and synthesize into communication tactics that resonate with and engage stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of public relations and journalism trends and best practices preferred.
  • Previous academic, extracurricular and/or work experience related to communications, journalism and/or public relations is strongly preferred.
  • Prior agency or corporate public relations internship experience is ideal.

Education:

We prefer candidates who are upper-level undergraduate students majoring in Journalism, Public Relations, English, Strategic Communications or Communications with a minimum GPA of 3.0, or first-year graduate students.
