Job Description

Provides legal advice and counsel on behalf of the Dispute Resolution Services – Employment group. Collaborates with and aligns on strategy, action planning, and communication with clients, business units, other areas of Law and Regulation and outside counsel. Proactively counsels clients on emerging legal issues and risk. Counsels clients on strategic initiatives, and serves on project teams as needed to provide legal advice. Conducts research, substantive drafting, reviewing, advising, and negotiating for more complex matters. Manages complex disputes. Provides budget oversight.


Labor, Employment, and Benefits


  • Negotiate terms of agreement with counsel if employee/former employee is represented by attorney for termination agreements in more complex situations
  • Provide advice and counsel to human resources and business units with regard to a wide range of employment and benefit issues, company policy, practices, and procedures
  • Provide advice and counsel with regard to more complex benefit plan, incentive plan, and executive compensation issues
  • Review and discuss workplace assistance issues (ADA) and counsel client to ensure compliance with ADA and other employment laws
  • Review and revise responses for agency complaints and requests, e.g., OSHA complaint TAA certification
  • Provide complex training to HR on various employment law issues, including ADA, terminations, reductions in force, immigration, Fair Labor Standards Act, National Labor Relations Act, ERISA
  • Supervise routine privileged investigations 


    Litigation / Disputes


  • Review assigned matters and develop appropriate strategies
  • Analyze and respond to more complex agency charges
  • Interview law firms/select counsel/retain law firm
  • Create dispute resolution strategy for complex matters
  • Manage dispute handling; participate in mediation/settlement conference, as appropriate
  • Keep business and human resources management advised of matter progress
  • Prepare and represent client at agency hearings
  • Assist in witness preparation and attend depositions, arbitrations, and trials, including expert witnesses, and attend depositions, as appropriate
  • Review and analyze relevant documentation
  • Attend class certification hearings, and communicate, as appropriate
  • Attend to all discovery requests:  Review discovery requests and develop strategy and responses, document production, e-discovery, etc.
  • Attend court for significant arguments and trials, as appropriate
  • Review/comment upon all draft/revised/final pleadings prior to filing

Job Qualifications

  • Possesses a juris doctorate and an license to practice law in Illinois (and/or other states as required)
  • 10+ years related experience typical
  • Computer skills, including MS Office suite, used in or related to the tasks performed
  • Exercises discretion and maintains confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Demonstrates ethics and integrity
  • Has relevant experience within a reputable law firm or an in-house legal department for a mid- to large-sized organization
  • Knowledge of legal holds and discovery processes
  • Able to manage a team and work through others to complete complex projects


    Management & Supervisory Skills

  • Budget management skills
  • Project management skills and law firm/vendor management experience
  • Able to interact with all levels of personnel and supervise/oversee the work of more junior resources
