Job Description

 

The Patent Team Lead will oversee and direct a team of outside firms and three internal professionals responsible for patent-related work within Allstate. The team collaborates and aligns with business and legal partners on strategy and manages a full array of patent issues, including patent prosecution, counseling, competitor analysis, clearance opinions, litigation support, and transaction support including M&A activities and strategic alliances.

 

Specific responsibilities of this lead patent attorney role will include:

  • Direct, lead, and oversee Allstate’s domestic and foreign patent activity
  • Partner with leaders to support business objectives through patent strategy development and application
  • Informing business strategy based on landscape and competitive assessments
  • Providing the business with progress updates and portfolio reviews
  • Authoritative client counseling on patent issues including integrating patent and trade secret considerations into business plans, enterprise risk avoidance and mitigation strategies, and strategies for enhancing patent portfolio scope and strength
  • Oversee preparation and prosecution of patent applications
  • Oversee infringement monitoring and analyze enforcement opportunities
  • Perform patent analyses and support for litigation, manage invalidity and non-infringement opinions and provide authoritative counsel to internal clients on freedom-to-operate and trade secret issues
  • Provide and oversee transaction support including for technology, licensing agreements, acquisitions, divestitures and strategic alliances
  • Lead the patent team, ensuring high performance and fostering individual and team development
  • Provide work direction, coaching, performance feedback, and final review approval for the patent team
  • Manage and collaborate with outside counsel to efficiently manage out-sourced work 
  • Provide budget oversight and evaluate outside counsel relationships periodically
  • Oversee training and recognition programs
  • Leverage external industry relationships to represent the company appropriately
  • Utilize data and analytics in work and in leading team

Job Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following attributes:

  • A juris doctorate and a license to practice law in Illinois or eligibility for reciprocal admission
  • Admission to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office
  • A minimum 10 years of legal experience focused on complex patent work including but not limited to transactional, adverserial, preparation and prosecution of patent applications
  • Experience in software IP law, technical arts, strategic partnerships, and strategic patenting concepts preferred
  • A proven manager, who has hired, trained, motivated, facilitated and led a team
  • Experience overseeing development and maintenance of domestic and foreign patent portfolios
  • Strategic problem solving skills, reliable judgment, excellent written and oral communication
  • Excellent legal and business acumen; ability to think like a business person, integrate legal and business issues, and partner with business leaders
  • Ability to develop and/or revise business tactics to support changing business strategies and direction
  • Ability to convey legal advice clearly and effectively, quickly establish credibility
  • Demonstrated teamwork, cross-functional collaboration, and positive opinion leader
  • Effectively use performance management and coaching
  • High level organizational and project management skills to handle multiple concurrent assignments
  • Record of sound, effective decision making and problem solving, excellent legal and practical judgment
  • Sense of urgency, engagement, and accountability
  • Change leader and manager focused on continuous improvement
  • Presence, poise, sound judgment, and gravitas; confident and able to earn the respect of others
  • Experience gained in both private practice and in-house is ideal
