Job Description

The Underwriting Research family is responsible for the establishment of standards and policy for the evaluation of risk during underwriting

The purpose of this position it to promote and facilitate the organization’s continuing efforts to improve processes, procedures, systems and overall results. This position will be responsible for monitoring policy and guidelines as they relate to Underwriting risk selection

This position will partner with vendor relationship, medical, and underwriting teams to ensure alignment of policy and requirement communication for risk assessment and changes in underwriting guidelines and policy. 

  • Perform investigative studies and research to evaluate/analyze data on underwriting requirements, product, agents business, rating and decline distribution trending to report on concerns and/or make recommendations for policy changes. 
  • Collaborate and partner with areas associated with the risk selection process (Medical team, Underwriting, and Vendor Relations) to create guidelines and processes that assist with maintaining mortality results
  • Prepare and give presentations on underwriting training information to underwriters employed at Allstate or new   employees; regarding existing or new processes, procedures or guidelines 
  • Maintains company specific notes for reinsurance underwriting manual. 
  • Create and execute appropriate communications to all related parties including marketing, field, functional and supporting department managers. Includes eFocus announcements, quarterly newsletter. 
  • Subject matter expertise in MVR, eIR, and Criminal records searches including analysis of findings to provide risk assessment direction to underwriters
  • Lead special projects to organize tasks and ensure deadlines are met.

Job Qualifications

  • 4-8 years underwriting experience
  • Industry course work – Association of Life Underwriters (ALU), Fellowship of Life Management Institute (FLMI), Certified Life Underwriting (CLU) preferred, or working toward these designations
  • Knowledge of underwriting systems and processes including the ability to analyze data, identify trends, draw conclusions and present sound recommendations for improvements
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Strong communication, documentation, and presentation skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work both individually and as a team to accomplish goals
  • Problem solving ability
  • Planning & Organizational skills
