Job Family Summary:
The Life Insurance Underwriting technical risk selection team assesses mortality impact based upon processes and confirms that processes and procedures are being followed. By providing guidance to underwriters in the operations team and conducting in-depth reviews of decision metrics and processes we will be able to provide improvement enhancements and simplifications, while maintaining mortality results. 

Job Summary:
The role of the technical underwriter will be doing a combination of routine underwriting evaluations on individual cases and projects involving different aspect of the life underwriting department.  

The Technical Underwriter role will provide feedback for certain underwriting job levels on decisions and consultative underwriting services for underwriting teams. The individual will create training and educational material to assist with the ongoing development of underwriters.  

This individual will partner with the vendor relationship, analytics, underwriting research and policy and other teams to analyze underwriting results and outcomes on a department, team and individual basis.  

Key Responsibilities:
For this role, primary responsibilities will include working cross functionally with a variety of teams including the medical team, technical chief team, underwriting leadership and the underwriting research and policy teams. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate and partner with areas associated with the risk selection process (Medical team, Underwriting Research and Development and Underwriting operations) to create guidelines and processes that assist with maintaining mortality results
  • Provide medical and financial underwriting expertise to life and jet underwriters as part of the underwriting referral process on cases that exceed the life underwriters’ approval authority and as part of their development, approval authority up to Underwriting level, i.e., face amount $2,000,000
  • Review a moderate volume of cases to evaluate the decision making skills at these underwriting authority levels, and make recommendations to management regarding giving additional authority to the underwriters being reviewed
  • Provide recommendations for process improvements in order to achieve the most efficient and effective outcome on individual cases; and processing logistics as a whole in the department
  • Analyze the discretionary Requirement ordering patterns of underwriters by level to assist with determining what the appropriate levels of ordering should be and if there are outliers in the department and make recommendations to the underwriting leadership team
  • Gather and evaluate/analyze reporting information on product, rating and decline distribution trending and whether or not the patterns are changing and analyze/evaluate why they may be changing; this may involve trending on a department, team or individual basis
  • Prepare and give presentations on underwriting training information to underwriters employed at Allstate or new employees; regarding existing or new processes, procedures or guidelines 
  • Creative thinking and analysis of life area distribution trends, rating trends

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years Life underwriting experience
  • Industry course work – Association of Life Underwriters (ALU), Fellowship of Life Management Institute (FLMI), Certified Life Underwriting (CLU) preferred, or working toward these designations
  • Intermediate proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
