The Database Administrator (DBA) team is responsible for the database design, administration, management and protection of Enterprise databases.  Accountabilities include the research, evaluation, design, creation, performance and tuning, security, support and maintenance of Database Management System technologies at Allstate.  Additional responsibilities include the creation and maintenance of database infrastructure to fulfill business or technology requirements.

 

Job Summary

The DBA Sr Consultant C2 creates database structures for medium to large projects, provides support in the day to day operational management of Database Technologies and aids in software maintenance lifecycle management with little to no assistance.  The DBA Sr Consultant analyzes, consults and recommends different options for database performance tuning, database configuration implementation, creates and maintains scripts and test plan execution.   Understand, recommends and implemented replication strategies for Disaster Recovery plans and can.  Execute Disaster Recovery test for Medium to Complex databases. Participates in Enterprise incident, change and problem management activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Creates physical data models by gathering requirements and working with application developers, System Analysts and Architects for complex models.  Converts logical data models into physical data models and generates DDL for implementation
  • Provides primary database maintenance and support including creation of DDL, gathering backup and recovery requirements, volumetrics and other requirements for medium complex applications with some guidance from DBA Technical leads
  • Analyzes, consults and recommends different options for database performance tuning, database configuration implementation and collaborates with vendors and subject matter experts on complex incidents
  • Analyzes and resolves more complex incidents, determining failure impact and proposing/initiating recovery solutions.  Identifies underlying problem areas and escalate with appropriate diagnostic details and analysis.  Utilizes Problem Management processes and procedures to document and highlight issues and areas of concern
  • Identifies bugs and patches related to issues/incidents, works with database vendor support for patch validation. Creates rollout plan for permanent problem resolution
  • Creates and defines proactive definition and installation of alerts and monitors for database performance and availability
  • Understands, maintains, documents and executes database availability software options based on Solution architecture requirements.  Can identify and troubleshoot problems with different availability options
  • Participates in recovery/rollback as necessary and participates in tests of back-up procedures to ensure integrity of the back-ups 
  • Understands and implements replication strategies per strategic solution and database criticality utilizing tools such as DPROP, Golden Gate, Mirroring, Data Guard, etc.
  • Creates ,modifies and reviews Disaster Recovery documentation for medium to complex databases.  Executes Disaster Recovery tests independently. Partners with DBA technical leads to review and approve documentation
  • Creates and/or modifies jobs for various utilities and provide database services and conducts periodic certification of back-up and recovery processes and verifies alignment with Business Resumption strategy
  • Reviews, introduces and follows architecture and enterprise database standards and partners with other business groups to interpret and implement architecture and enterprise standards
  • Collect and analyze database capacity metrics. Conduct trend analysis and compare to forecast.  Provides recommendations for minimum configuration of hardware and storage requests based on application requirements 
  • Participate in recovery/rollback as necessary and participates in tests of back-up procedures to ensure integrity of the back-ups
  • Provide intermediate database maintenance services to application development teams
  • Create and modify jobs for various utilities and provide database services and conducts periodic certification of back-up and recovery processes and verifies alignment with Business Resumption strategy
  • Installs and tests products to improve overall database environment, maintains awareness of database software futures, suggest uses or improvements, and conducts impact assessments of new versions of the database management software 
  • Reviews, introduces and follows architecture and enterprise database standards and partners with other business groups to interpret and implement architecture and enterprise standards

Job Qualifications

Database Administration- 3

Has demonstrated an understanding of the difference between hierarchical and relational data base structure, both in theory and practical application. Has designed one new application database or modified an existing database. Possesses in-depth knowledge of the data definition language(DDL), data manipulation language (DML) and data control language (DCL) of a major relational DBMS. Capable of independently performing database loads, reorgs, backup and recovery using database utilities. Can perform database performance optimization and exception analysis and correction for applications of a complex nature. Has ability to gather and work with capacity planning to interpret volume metrics and trends to address database needs identified in the application profile.

Database Capacity Planning- 2

Has ability to gather and work with capacity planning to interpret volume metrics and trends to address database needs identified in the application profile Generally works under the direction of others who determine what reports and statistical analyses are required.

Data Modeling- 2

Possesses sufficient proficiency to successfully demonstrate the skill data modeling in applications of moderate difficulty. Generally works under the direction of others while accomplishing assignments. Knows how to integrate data modeling into an overall systems development methodology (SDM). Is familiar with logical business data modeling using some of the prominent structured and object-oriented modeling methods. Knows the fundamental principles of conceptual data modeling using the leading Entity/Relationship Diagramming (ERD) methods.

Database Monitoring and Tuning- 3

Demonstrates mastery of DB monitoring and tuning in at least one DBMS. Can perform performance optimization and exception analysis and correction in applications of a complex nature without requiring support and direction from others. Able to train and educate others in the use of a DB monitoring tool. Can recommend design changes to improve database importance.

Additional Qualifications

Physical Database Design- 3

Has designed advanced physical databases. Demonstrated the ability to bring all the various pieces together to complete the process of defining a database for a business application. Takes into consideration that the objects defined during physical modeling can vary depending on the relational database software being used. Has worked with at least two relational database systems that have variations with the way data types are represented and the way data is stored. Has prepared advanced server model diagrams that show tables, columns, and relationships within a database, user feedback documentation, and database design documentation.

Programming- 2

Demonstrates the ability to conduct programming to build or enhance simple programs. Has conducted the basic phases of programming including program design, coding from specifications, testing according to test specifications, debugging, and program documentation. Demonstrates knowledge of the basic coding constructs. Awareness of the importance of proper formatting of source code for its readability and to facilitate maintenance.

Software Installation and Upgrade- 2

Has the ability to install software on a specific platform. Demonstrates an ability to resolve problems that may occur during the installation of software. Is capable of understanding the design and purpose of the software being installed.

Education: College degree or equivalent work experience; 3-5 years in database management, testing, scripting, or configuration
