Job Description

Allstate Investments Public Asset Group is seeking an Associate Analyst to be part of a team that supports our Bank Loan and CLO portfolios. As part of Allstate Investments’ Below Investment Grade (BIG) activities, we invest in broadly syndicated bank loans of BIG-rated companies for several mandates, including the Allstate general accounts ($1.0B portfolio) as well as three Collateralized Loan Obligations (CLOs) managed by our team under the AIMCO name ($1.5B total AUM).  We also invest in debt and equity tranches of CLOs managed by 3rd parties ($0.6B).  AIMCO currently has three CLO structures outstanding and we seek to grow this platform.

This job is an important part of the Below Investment Grade team and involves supporting the portfolio managers as they manage bank loan assets across the various mandates.  It involves serving as a liaison with sell-side contacts to track and inform the portfolio managers and credit research group as to primary and secondary market activity.  It also involves the preparation of materials and analysis used in conversations with internal and external parties for the purpose of growing the CLO platform.  This job may also involve following certain bank loan investments in a research capacity under the guidance of a senior analyst.  Our process is very team-oriented, so the ability to work well within the group is critical.  The ultimate goal of the research and recommendations is to help the deliver the best possible results for our clients.  This job involves working closely with portfolio managers, developing investment themes, credit analysis and relative value recommendations.


Key Responsibilities

Under the direction of the portfolio managers, the Associate Analyst will be expected to focus on the following:

  • Monitor primary market bank loan transactions, includes interfacing with sell side contacts on current and prospective transactions in the market; ensure research analysts are aware of and connected to transactions in their respective sectors.
  • Input and manage trade tickets.
  • Serve as liaison between internal bank loan middle office team and sell side contacts in regards to bank loan trade settlement, amendments, repricings and refinancings.
  • Support portfolio managers as they perform secondary market trading across the portfolios.
  • Gather, track and analyze information used to support the growth of the CLO platform.
  • Working with the PMs on existing and new CLO structures, including portfolio modeling, documentation review and market analysis.
  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis to support the underwriting of potential investment opportunities; this involves reviewing deal presentations and other material, reviewing the issuer’s road show presentation, and discussing the company’s historical financial performance and business outlook with the portfolio managers.
  • Contributing to the improvement of the overall investment process by continually exploring new ideas, processes and technologies that will benefit the group.
  • Provide support for internal and external communications on an as-needed basis

Job Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • One to three years of investment experience, with a focus on below investment grade corporates
  • Solid understanding of the capital markets, quantitative methods, finance, economics and market cycles
  • Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to be a reliable team player, to build trust and confidence through collaborations with a wide range of internal and external colleagues.
  • Ability to work efficiently, organize and prioritize assignments
  • Ability to work well with internal and external contacts
  • Previous experience with the broadly syndicated bank loan and/or CLO markets a plus
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Products and Bloomberg.  Programming and coding skills a plus.
