Data Discovery and Decision Science (D3) is the research and analytics organization at Allstate.  We are solving some of today’s most complicated analytics problems, making the lives of our of Allstate colleagues easier and more productive, and driving our mission to deliver perfect insurance solutions to our customers.  We are avid about learning new ways to get the most value from our massive data resources.  As a Data & Analytics Manager in D3 you will get 10% of your time to innovate, learn, collaborate, and teach.  We are partnering to incorporate analytics into every aspect of the enterprise.  Developing ourselves and others is key to our success. 


Job Description

This Data & Analytics Manager role in Data, Discovery and Decision Science (D3) is responsible for leading a team of Data Science professionals in full-cycle analytics development work that allows clients to use data-driven insights to make decisions that enable Allstate to profitably grow.  In this role you will help set the strategy and define the roadmap for development efforts and guide your team in their execution.  You will provide technical expertise to Data Science and Data Engineering projects.  You will also have the option to be a hands-on contributor.

 

This role includes:

Strategic Leadership

  • Designs and delivers of complex technical projects
  • Provide technical direction on data science and data engineering projects.
  • Ensure that team lives into the standards of data science and data engineering.
  • Consulting with and influencing business partners to develop, communicate and execute on projects.
  • Continually monitor and anticipate resource needs and make proactive recommendations and oversee day to day operations.
  • Provide strategic direction and take accountability for requirements, procedures and standards.
  • Provides effective, real-time performance management feedback, coaching and mentoring.
  • Prioritizes talent cultivation, retention and succession planning.
  • Be an influential leader and lead by example when handling ambiguous and difficult situations.
  • Drive effective use of budget.

 

Problem Solving

  • Anticipate and resolve critical to complex operational issues.
  • Engage appropriate parties in discussion to drive issue resolution and decision making.
  • Leverage numbers / metrics / prior experiences to draw conclusions and drive business results.

 

Collaboration and Communication

  • Work across the organization to ensure coordination of the project portfolio with other initiatives
  • Develop and deliver communications for complex technical projects to non-technical audiences (appropriate audience, vehicle, level of detail, urgency)
  • Project strong storytelling skills (verbal & written) and engaging leadership presence
  • Act as a liaison between business unit and technology area and build strong relationships
  • Be a thought leader on team communication needs

 

Knowledge Management

  • Demonstrate advanced data science and insurance knowledge, working knowledge of all teams (business, technology, etc.), applies it and teaches others
  • Articulate corporate goals & strategy, how it connects to  individual teams / disciplines, applies it and teach others
  • Effectively navigate across Allstate Personal Lines and Shared Services
  • Actively share; purposeful and strategic conduit from business to team and stakeholders

 

Project Management

  • Developing, coordinating and executing projects in a quality manager.
  • Manage the portfolio/inventory of all team projects, to ensure projects are implemented on time, at or under budget and with quality
  • Represent team in project meetings to communicate results, issues, timelines, etc.
  • Provide regular reporting for assigned projects

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 7 + years’ career experience.
  • 2+ years as managing teams in the strategic development and execution of predictive analytics required.
  • Advanced experience in data science, predictive modeling, and building and analyzing large databases in the Hadoop environment required.  This could be hands-on or as a manager of strategic teams and initiatives.
  • Prior insurance experience preferred.
  • Agile experience preferred.
  • Experience with Python and R preferred
  • Experience with the Hadoop environment including Hive, Spark, and Sqoop preferred.
