Job Description

We call our larger organization MARA (Marketing Analytics, Research, and Administration). The responsibilities for this team range from ‘now decisions’ (e.g.: what is the ROI for a particular campaign for last week & should it continue or should it be modified) to long term planning and strategy (e.g.: What should we spend next quarter in digital advertising? How do we increase the value of marketing without increasing its cost?)


Our team, Marketing Data Science, tackles the entire spectrum of data-driven analytic solutions, from basic big data research to predictive modeling, to solution deployment and software engineering. We sit with marketing management to identify opportunities for high value analytics, we architect the approach and execute it using state-of-the-art technologies. Our solutions get integrated into live business processes, decision making, and go-to-market initiatives. We work as a lean, highly focused and results-oriented team with colleagues in three continents. We are indifferent to problem complexity and the appearance of intractability and seek others with a similar mindset. Are you cut from the same cloth? Here are some questions:


  • Do you like to tame large, unwieldy data sets?
  • Are you motivated by the prospect of extracting meaning from murky information?
  • Are you comfortable with predictive modeling techniques?
  • Are you friendly with Unix, SQL, R, Python, or SAS?


If you answered Yes to 3 of the 4 questions above you may well be an excellent candidate for an internship on the Marketing Data Science team at Allstate and we want to talk to you! (We’ll give you special treatment if you can explain the relevance of Ockham’s Razor).  

As a member of the Marketing Data Science team, you will have daily interactions with a cadre of top notch specialists in predictive modeling, software engineering, business analysis, and applied mathematics. You will work on difficult and challenging business problems. Some of them will have potentially transformative consequences for the company. For example:


  • You will find critically important customer segments and learn how to identify their analogs in the general population.
  • You will work with thousands of behavioral and cross-sectional data attributes on over a hundred million households.
  • You will translate marketing theory into testable business propositions, then help implement them.
  • You will learn to create robust and repeatable analytic processes.
  • You will apply techniques of data exploration, data visualization, and rapid model development.

Job Qualifications

  • The perfect candidate will have a background in a quantitative or technical field, and will have great interest in working with large data sets to influence data-driven decision making
  • You are working towards a Bachelors or Master’s in a field such as statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, computer science, finance, or economics
  • You have the analytic agility to deal with a variety of problems in an abstract manner
  • You have the ability to communicate complex analysis to non-technical audiences
  • You are detail-oriented, and approach tasks in a highly organized manner
  • You have experience with at least one statistical software package such as Python, R, pySpark, (SAS also considered)
  • Development experience in any scripting language (bash, Python, Perl, etc.) is a huge plus
  • Experience with big data and big data tools also a huge plus
